Newbie Virtualbox have problems with network connectivity

Post by mobjerkn »

Hi,
As stated above I'm a complete newbie to Virtualbox but I wanted to give it a try as an alternative to vmWare.
Install was no problem and installing my Oracle Linux also was easy but I have to major problems:
1. Getting the Linux on my network with DHCP or with a fixed ip address.
--- I've tried the default NAT network and I've tried bridged network but none of the seems to work.
--- If I type in ifconfig I can't see any ip address to the guest OS at all.
2. Sharing a folder on my host with installation media and mounting this folder on my linux machine.
---mount -t vboxsf Downloads Downloads
---This is not a major problem as I can transfer with SFTP when I get the network up and running.

All hints and reply's will be appreciated.
Regards
Morten

On the shared folders problem, you should install the guest additions in the guest, and set up the the GA shared folders feature in the VM settings.

On your other question, I'm sure that a Linux forum (e.g. Linux guests) would be a better place to seek Linux expertise.

With the guest shut down, make sure that the virtual NIC is set to bridged. Then do the following:
  • 1) boot the guests and open the terminal and type ifconfig -a and post the results here.
    2) Don't post but look this over and make sure it is correct VBoxManage list bridgedifs from the host.
    3) post the guests log file (as an attachment)

Hi,
Thanks for reply's. I've attached a screenshot of both the virtualbox network config and the client ifconfig -a.
Also does anyone know how I can get the default look and feel back on the virtualbox (guest menu)?

Morten

What about 2) above? Did it report the proper information?
Also check firewall and anti-virus on the host to make sure they are not blocking the VBox network.

To be honest I didn't understand what you wanted me to verify in point 2.
Any chance you can describe it?

Open a command window on the Windows host and change to the directory that has VBoxManage in it.
Then type VBoxManage list bridgedifs and press enter.

Best I can tell at this point, VirtualBox is content with the Bridge and doing what it can.
I see the MAC address in the guest that is configured to the bridge so the guest is seeing the bridge connection.

At this point it could be a configuration issue on the guest, Firewall, Anti-virus program, VPN software, or the Sesam Virtual Adapter that could be stopping this from working.
  • 1) try running dhconfig on the guest.
    2) disable host firewall and virus software and try the guest again.
    3) check the guests network configuration and make sure it is set to get its address from DHCP. (assuming you have a router in your network)

I don't know if I'm out, but you better take a look at your /etc/urandom/ rules, such as the rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (not sure about this name) and check about the MAC assignation. Only the MAC addresses you've already configured in your VirtualBox settings have to be set as rules. Delete the others. Then, reboot your VM.

Tell me if it helped you !
