XP guest behaves as 64bit

In order to run an old (16bit) application in a Windows 7 64bit PC (Dell Inspiron All-in-One),
I was able to create a guest XP on the Dell using a copy of the vdi for an XP Pro guest from my 32bit PC (HP Pavillion dv7TX)
and the application worked OK in the 64bit Dell XP guest.
After trying to repeat this for a friend on his 64bit Win 7 (ACER laptop)
the XP guest behaves as if it were 64bit and refuses to run the same application.
VirtualBox 4.1.6 is used in all PCs.
Any comments would be appreciated
