Hi Everybody,
After I updated virtualbox, as I had always done without having any problems, my guests no longer run. I keep getting this error message.
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows7.
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WRITE_NON_SYS_GROUP).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}
What the heck? I haven't changed anything on my system and now I can't boot any of my guests. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've also tried installing the last version that was working for me. Nothing has helped. This is getting rather frustrating. What do I need to do to get this running again? I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Blair
P.S. I also can't install the extension box. Here's the error message from that.
Failed to install the Extension Pack /Users/brconner/Downloads/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.6-74713.vbox-extpack.
The installer failed with exit code 1: VBoxExtPackHelperApp: error: The group is not a system group and it has write access to '/Applications'.

Re: Guests no longer running after updating Virtualbox
Have you considered running Disk Utility and repairing the disk permissions?
"I haven't changed anything on my system ...". Yes you did, you updated VirtualBox. Based on numerous prior posts on this forum about the same problem it appears that the installer occasionally fails to properly set the permissions of the folders and files that VirtualBox uses. Repairing the disk permissions can fix this.

Re: Guests no longer running after updating Virtualbox
I haven't upgraded yet because of concern about this happening again, but went through the OSX Lion permission madness for a month or so.
It's a feature: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11 ... rmissions/
Disk utility permission repair often does not solve the new problems.
A new set of restrictions (ACLs, Access Control something), independent of and parallel to the older permissions, also exists.
I don' t know if the VBox installer is aware of these or knows what to do with them.
This may help, it fixed some of my problems for a while (they come back)

BUT do read all the way through then google for newer information

Re: Guests no longer running after updating Virtualbox
Have you tried /Machine/Add from VBoxManager GUI (after uninstalling and reinstalling)?brcflip2001 wrote:... my guests no longer run....
I just went through something similar after a kernel panic -- and while VBox couldn't see any of the VMs, using 'Add' brought them back ok.
Didn't fix the kernel panics, but that's a different topic.

Re: Guests no longer running after updating Virtualbox
Had the same problem on MAC OSX Lion (10.7.3) when I updated today to 4.1.10 file permission error,
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WRITE_NON_SYS_GROUP).
Solved it and got all my machines back by changing the permission of the app itself to system Read & Write, admin Read only, everyone Read only

Re: Guests no longer running after updating Virtualbox
I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.3 host.
Had the exact same permissions problem on this system, and on a similarly configured Mac Pro. Everything worked with Vbox 4.1.6 but I got the problem with 4.1.8 and 4.1.10.
I tried everything, repairing permissions, fondling with the permissions myself, nothing worked very well, before I realized I should try uninstall Vbox. I uninstalled 4.1.6 with the uninstall script in it's own installer (probably would work with the uninstall script in the newest installer) and then installed 4.1.10, and everything works fine!

Re: Guests no longer running after updating Virtualbox
After updating to VitualBox 4.1.10 r76795 (on MAC OS X 10.7.3 [Lion]) Windows XP SP3 guest fails to boot.
Problem was resolved by turning off USB devices, then Windows XP booted normally.

Re: Guests no longer running after updating Virtualbox
Hi,
I upgraded to Mountain Lion, install the virtual box and add my clone machine. Yesterday was working perfectly, but today it brought this same error that you guys are having. For my surprise, I run the permissions check in Terminal and the permissions are correct.
The only thing that I did between yesterday (that the machine was working) and today, was to install VLC.
Any help will be appreciated... I feel desperate.
(I installed the virtual box and the exactly same clone machine in a friends mac running also mountain lion and its working perfectly! I feel curse!)
HELP!
