i am new to vb. can i install 4.1.6 over the 4.0 ver i have setup and not lose my settings.

I have never had any problems doing that (but some people have). I would make sure that the vms are shutdown, not in a saved state. That can cause problems. I would also reinstall the guest additions with the new version when you start the vms.
