can't get rdp working

Post by theghetto »

I've got vbox running windows 2003 guest on windows 2003 host. The host has terminal services enabled and is already listening on port 3389. I've changed the port in the settings for the guest, but still can't seem to rdp in from another machine either by specifying the host or the guest IP address in RDP client.

It is in bridged mode and the network is functional, no problem communicating with guest. Just don't know what I"m doing wrong with the RDP. Firewall logs don't show the packets are being dropped. Any suggestions?

If you changed the port in the guest settings then you are going to use vRDP which is a VirtualBox connection.
You need to read the Chapter 7 Remote virtual machines in your VirtualBox users manual.

Hint: you need the ExtPack installed, and you access through the host ip address and the port that you assigned.
Example = 192.168.0.45:3390

I would use anything I can get to work. I've read that and I have the extensions (guest additions?) installed on the guest and am using the host IP address and port number I chose in my RDP client. Just doesn't seem to work.

Hmm, got the extensions installed. Now when I attempt to connect via windows rdp it says the session is ended, then it says the session is about to end, possibly might be low on virtual memory.

This indicates a refusal on the guests side.
Make sure that the authentication is set to null.

One last tip: (after you throughly read the authentication section)
If you use mstsc to make the connection, make sure that you tell it to save the password or it will not work properly. Its a Windows thing. Not saving will not send the proper information all at once and usually causes a failure.

If you don't have it save the credentials it won't prompt you for them before opening the connection, doesn't send any credentials with the connection and relies on the OS to prompt for them by itself. Since VB isn't a Windows based OS (and can't know about the users in the guest) that of course isn't happening so the connection errors out...

The answer to most of your questions can be found in the Forum FAQ, search for vRDP
