I believe this is the same issue I am having. My situation is slightly different. I have a Ubuntu 10.04 host and a Windows XP client. My backups from Quicken recently stopped working. I have an external USB drive I am using as backup which is connected to XP as a share from the host. The share was created by the command:
VBoxManage sharedfolder add "WinXP" -name "backup" -hostpath /media/0FFD-432F_/backup/
The file I am creating is about 50Meg. I do not know the exact version of Virtual Box it stopped working but I will also try going back to 4.0.4.

Re: problem with large file access v. 4.1.4
It seems this problem still exists using 4.1.12_Ubuntu r77245. Now it is a bigger problem. I no longer have the option to run the old version that worked as I have upgraded to 12.04 and the working version is not available for that version of ubuntu. Any one have a suggestion?
Guess I'll try installing the one for 10.04 and see if it works.
Well I was able to install the one for 10.04 and it seem to be working fine. I did have to find a forward port of libpython2.6 to satisfy the dependencies.
