Snapshot Problem Virtual Box

Post by debasishgang7 »

Hi all,

I am using virtual box in my Windows XP PC.I was using guest OS Ubuntu 10.04.I wanted to upgrade it ti 11.11.SO i took a snapshot of the previous 10.04 installation and Upgraded the Guest OS to 11.10.And in the guest PC its working fine. But the problem is when i take the ".vdi" file (The hard disk of Ubuntu) to my laptop its loading Ubuntu 10.04.(The Ubuntu 10.04 before Up-gradation ):( :( :(.
What i have to do to take the hard disk of the Upgraded version of Ubuntu to My Laptop.

Thanks

When you took the snapshot the base VDI was frozen - it continues to contain 10.04 - and a new differences file was created in your VM/Snapshots folder. All the 11.10 changes went into the latter file. Since you used snapshots it means you can't just copy VDI files around willy nilly. You have to copy the entire VM folder to keep the snapshot chain and associated control information intact.

What you should have done was make a backup (or clone) of the old VDI, and then install 11.10 without creating a snapshot. If something went wrong you would restore the original VDI (or delete the clone). If all went well then perhaps at some point you would delete the old 10.04 image to recover the disk space.
