error: not a valid win32 application

Every time I attempt to download and install ANYTHING (adobe reader, for example), the installation fails. Most installers fail to run with a "... not a valid Win32 application" error. Other applications such as Reader, Chrome, Firefox, simply fail to download the full installer. I downloaded some installers (Camtasia for example) on my Mac, placed the installer in a shared folder with the vm, and it installed fine. I cannot do the same for Adobe Reader. Installing from a CD seems to work okay.
I am assuming this is a Virtual Box issue since I have it on both of my computers and all installations of Virtual Box and Windows XP within the vm are new. Both VMs have 2 GB ram assigned and a 60 gig hard drive.
I have this problem on fresh installs of WinXP, service pack 3 on both an iMac, core 2 duo 3.06 and MacBook Pro, i7 2.66 both running Lion. I did NOT have this problem before Lion, or before the fresh WinXP installation.
I am running virtual box 4.1.4, latest version as I wrote this.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
