Can't connect to the internet using Windows XP

I am using Windows XP SP3 in virtual box on my macbook pro; snow leopard. However I can't use the internet while in windows XP. I looked around and all the responses to issues were to use NAT, I have used NAT and the bridge one but neither has worked. Just wondering if there is anything else I can do? Or do I have to use an ethernet cable or something.

I tried using an ethernet cable and still no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

How exactly did you use an ethernet cable? Connect your MAC to a physical network? Did you reset the vm to use NAT or did you try to use bridged mode? Both should work.
While the Mac is using an ethernet connection, reset the networking in the vm to NAT and boot it up. If it cannot access the Internet, look at the networking config from control panel or do an ipconfig from a command prompt. If that doesn't tell you anything, post the results here. You do have network card configured in the vm?

I connected the ethernet cable and set it too NAT. It didn't work. So I also tried the bridge and it didn't work. I've also (if this helps) made sure the mac address is my ethernet address - the code that comes up in system preferences -. I've tried to use control panel, but I'm not going to lie I'm not entirely sure how to go about using it, I did spend about 40 minutes going through each of the internet connections options though. I'll try the IPconfig.

I try to use "run" in the start menu and type ipconfig, but it shows a black screen with one line of white text and then disappears too fast for me to read. I don't think that's meant to happen, it's like it crashes after about half a second.

Instead of typing 'ipconfig' at the start menu, if you can, type 'cmd' then press enter, which will give you the black DOS screen. Then type in 'ipconfig'. You should be able to read what is there!

Good advice. But it isn't really DOS anymore (XP and later are not built on DOS). It is just called the command prompt (as I said in the first place). I keep forgetting that some users are new to Windows as well as new to VirtualBox.

If NAT doesn't work there is not much point in trying bridged. The default setting is NAT because that should work automatically. The vm will share the host's Internet connection. Bridged will only work automatically if you are on a network with a DHCP server. Many people are not (which is why bridged is not the default setting).

Yea I am new to windows as well. I'll try and use the command prompt. And the fact that it's meant to work with NAT is worrying me :/.

Please post the exact and full vbox guest settings. Including NIC type.
And check if in the guest the virtual NIC is detected without "!".

I may sound like a complete idiot but I'm not sure what you mean by "virtual NIC" :/. Sorry.

Look into the guests device manager, if the network interface is correct.
