Hi all

Im new to virtual box and i used to use windows vpc. I am using the vhd files created with vpc and now i noticed vm's server 2k3 and win xp cannot ping each other! I basically want to run these vm's in their own enviornment and dont want them to interfere with the outside network so they dont need th physical nic's.

I have read that in the network settings the Hosy only network adapter is the one to select, however when I select this the drop down menu for adapter name is empty and the red lettering error message says "On the network: Adapter 1 page, no host-only network adapter is selected"

I cannot howver select n adaptor as its empty so... after much google searching with dead ends I end up here

has any one else encountered this one??

Thanks for reading.

This usually indicates a failed install where the network drivers were not all selected or some other issue. You can try re-installing VirtualBox, select repair and read every option to make sure that they are installed.

As a side note the host-only will not keep the guests isolated from the host. The best way to do this is to use the internal adapter. Setup Windows Domain in VirtualBox

I was just thinking of a reinstall so ill go that route as I dont have the same problem with virtual box on a different windows 7 physical host machine. I have chcked out your link, from what i can tell it means to use ics. Basiaclly like the illustration I had a server 2k3 and xp vm and I wanted the xp vm getting its ip from the server 2k3 vm's dhcp role, instead it was getting its ip from an external physical router!!

Is there a simple drop down option to prevent this from happening and completely isolate the vms within their virtual bubble? pardon me if I didnt grasp the illustration fully

Thanks mate.

The VBox internal network (intnet) is a selection you can choose in the guests network settings. This connection will emulate a network switch and will be totally isolated from the host or it's network. With the additions of the ICS or pFsense you have the ability of providing the Windows (isolated) network the Internet, for updates, Etc.. The ICS will have two NICs and one with be NAT pointing to the local network, and the other on the intnet or private network.
