Vbox Manager Settings Button Greyed out

I was trying to enable 3d acceleration in windows xp sp3. Couldn't figure out what to do to make it work. Installed guest additions and the 3d and 2d acceleration button in dxdiag was greyed out.Someone told me I had to also check the 3d acceleration option in the vbox manager settings. Went to the manager and found out that the settings button was greyed out.

Can someone tell me how to fix this? been at it for a month now.

The guest needs to be shut down first (not saved mode).
