Hi,
I'm very new to this. I manage to install my usb pendrive in the guest os which is xp system and i am using window 7 64 bit and my vb version is 4.1.4. It just need to be reattach again after I set in the setting in the virtual box. But, when I did the same thing for my usb modem, it wont install the modem.

First I check this option

Then I run the xp, and the window detect a new hardware

Then I stuck when dont know where to get this file. In host system, it will install automatically but not in the guest. Thought it will be the same as the usb pendrive.

Then I check in the device management and I see yellow sign.

Can anyone tell me how to install the usb modem in the guest system? I just want to use internet using the guest system.
And, if I use internet in the guest system, do I need to install antivirus too?

Thanks.

How can the XP machine download a driver without an Internet connection?

Why do you need the guest to have its own Internet connection through the modem? Did the guest not have Internet connection already? Usually a guest can share the host's Internet connection with the default setup. Did you try?

If you really want the guest to have its own Internet connection through the modem you will need somehow get the modem installation file into your XP vm. You could copy it to your pendrive.

Hi BillG
Im very new to anything related to a computer and networking or troubleshooting.
I did install xp as my guest and manage to use my pendrive in guest virtual box. When I attach my usb modem, it can detect but wont install the modem automatically. So I download the extension for virtual box, but still cant install the usb modem. So I did what you are suggesting last night. And it succeed. I can put the driver in the guest and need to install it manually.

Huh? By default guest can share the internet? Hm.. I try but failed, thats why I need to install the modem in guest. Actually I just want to try if the guest can ever connect to the internet in the vm. I really dont know why I'm installing this vm but I just want to try. I heard someone talk about it last week so I just want to know how its work. Its a great product. I never thought that we can use two os in one screen.

By the way, thanks for the answer BillG!

The guest can access the Internet by sharing the host's Internet connection (just as a networked physical machine can share another machine's Internet connection). The process is called NAT (network address translation) and it is the default network setting when you install a guest OS in the vm.
