Can't pause a session and exit VirtualBox?

Post by ant »

Hi!

I used VMware Workstations a lot since v3. I noticed in VirtualBox (VB) doesn't have a pause session, so I can exit VB and come back later to that session. Closing VB asks me to shut down, save, revert, etc. my session. I don't want to do that! Or did I miss something?

This was in Linux/Debian host so I assume this is the same in Windows and Mac OS X hosts.

Thank you in advance. :)

Host+P? Menu > Pause VM? Did you even bother to look at the menu options and the User Manual?

I did, but that doesn't let me exit my session in pause mode like VMware Workstation!

Well, you shouldn't compare VMware with VB anyway. You either pause the VM, or you save the VM state to resume it later (and free up RAM). I really don't understand what you're talking about, if neither of these two options are what you're after.

Oh well, thanks anyways. I guess VB doesn't have that feature [pause, exit VB, do whatever, launch VB, resume session, etc.] (and others). I was hoping to dump VMware Workstation since it was expensive/costly. I guess VB isn't what I am looking for. :(

It would help if you described what that pause mode is that you're talking about. Not everyone here is familiar with Vmware. I haven't used it in years and at work we have ESXi (soon to be XenServer) and never pause servers.

Exactly how does the save option you're offered when closing the VM window not do what you want to do here?

It pauses the VM, writes it's hardware state and memory contents to a file and allows you to resume the machine at the very same spot you saved it when you start it the next time?

I use this all the time to shutdown my machine before I go home from work, and I can resume just where I left when I start the VM again...
