Windows 98 SE EXTREMELY SLOW

Post by chrisssj2 »

Source pc: E6400 @ 2.6 ghz, 3.25 GB ram,AMD hd6570, windows 7 32bit

Using latest virtualbox with 384 mb ram installed, 64 mb VRAM, 3 gb harddisk, 40% of 1 cpu cap. VT-x / AMD-v disabled

My one and only goal is to play Revenant from 1999 with 30 fps on full detail in this machine over a network with my other pc.

So far I can't even browse internet cuz it's EXTREMLY SLOW. Graphics are too. Only resolution is 640x480.

Im not sure if I have guest additions, because when I press install guest-adittions nothing happens.
EDIT: just downloaded the iso, ran installer... installer said guest-additions not supported for this OS.. + I couldn't select 3D acceleration says something about safe mode..

Is there a way to play this game under virtualbox?

Im new to all this. Thanks.

I can't even install winzip or winrar to install these 3rd party videodrivers it takes me 10 min to go a website...
Winrar says unsupported, winzip doesn't even start..

What would you suggest to play this game Revenant succesfully?

Installing Windows native is the best solution.

WinDOS is not supported from VBOX. XP or Windows 7 is much better. If you want a VM, so better try XP instead of WinDOS.

What do you mean installing windows native, you mean outside VM, really installing it? MIght other virtual machines do better with windows 98?

The problem is revenant has issue's with windows xp/windows 7...

Recent versions of VirtualBox seem to require VT-x enabled in order to do a good job of running Win9x/WinME. VT-x must be enabled in the VM settings, and it must be enabled in your host PC's BIOS. The good news is that with VT-x enabled and the BearWindows SVGA graphics driver installed, a Win98SE guest really flies.

Until you get the guest running sweetly, I suggest that anything you need to unzip, you unzip on your host. Repack as an ISO which can be mounted in the Win98SE guest. Longer term it is quite easy to set up a network share inside a Win98 guest which an XP or later Windows host will see. It is harder (read: I never got it to work well) to get a Win98 guest to recognize a network share served up by the XP or later host.
