The variable VBOX_USER_HOME defines the location of the virtualbox.xml file, the one that holds all the VM definitions (registered VMs). And yes, VB will follow symlinks, as that's how I've worked for quite some time (and still do). But you have to make sure that the paths are exactly the same in each OS you use VB for the VM location.
