Virtual Box Flavors

Post by philpense »

Just joined this day. Am I mistaken or is there no download for Windows 7 64bit Intel processor machines? Guidance sought.

Yes, you are mistaken.

"VirtualBox 4.1.4 for Windows hosts x86/amd64" is the version of VirtualBox for all 32 or 64 bit versions of Windows running on Intel or AMD processors. amd64 is code for a 64-bit OS, just as x86 is code for a 32-bit OS.

Intel had their own 64 bit instruction set, but it never worked well for the masses and is only available as server platform. They are slowly stopping this form too. It's the Itanium branch of their CPUs, or IA64 in short. AMD was the first to have a 64 bit desktop CPU with their Athlon CPUs 8 years ago. Intel has purchased a license to the AMD patent some years ago so it can incorporate the same 64 bit instruction set. Because of this, the 64 bit architecture is usually referred to as AMD64.
