cant switch to 16bit mode and stuck in 16 colors

Post by mallet »

Hi all

I been trying for the last week or so to get one of my games running on my virtual box XP phyical machine so I can windows 98. the real problem is within virtual box. its stuck in 16 colors mode and wont let me select a higher color or higher res. I have tried to install guest additions but each time I tried to install it, it says
"the virtual box guest additions cannot be installed on this version of windows" in my case, my copy of win98. I did another clean install and made sure I checked the 2d and 3d settings in VB but didnt make any difference.
I recently installed ver 4.1.4 for windows in the hope the fix I was after was sorted but it wasnt. However, I have taken error messages within device manager but dont know how to fix them:

This error message has stopped appearing and was only showed at the initial install of win98:

any help will be awesome :)

Read the Windows 98 tutorials in the "Howtos and Tutorials" forum, Windows guests area.

thanks for the link :D I followed that post and got it working in 16/32 bit mode with the correct res. However, I followed the posts to get the soundblaster option working and I cant seem to get any sound. Even with sound enabled in the options, it doesnt work. and I also tried installing drivers with the AC 97 option and I still coundlt get it working. it looks like one of the pictures in the sound tutorial is missing. Do I need to update my directx files on my windows 98 virtual PC?

For audio to work it must be enabled (see "Enable Audio" checkbox), the Host Audio Driver field must be "Windows DirectSound" (not null audio), and the Audio Controller field should be SoundBlaster 16, not anything else. Also, make sure audio isn't muted inside the guest.

Your Win98 VM has nothing except basic VESA graphics, so you can pretty much forget about any app that needs DirectX - so no, you don't need to update the directx files in your Win98 VM.
