Ok. So I have a problem. Spent a couple of hours trying to figure out whats wrong. Maybe its just me? (have no experience with this what so ever)

Host OS : Mac Lion 10.7.1 (Btw never had a Mac in my life before)
Guest OS : Windows XP sp3 32 bit

So I installed the guest os from a cd, it was no problem. Then I realized that I needed to enable 3d acceleration and 2d video acceleration. Spent an hour looking around trying to learn how to do this on my own. (didnt get it ~) I see the boxes to be checked but they are not checkable (greyed out)
(Tried to make this as descriptive for anyone else who might need this)

What i did...

• Installed Guest additions under the 'Devices' at the top of the Mac OS screen.
• Realized that I needed to install in safe mode if I wanted to enable 3D acceleration.
• Installed it again in safe mode (getting to it by pressing f8 at the beginning) checked the 3D acceleration box to install it.
• Rebooted and went to run and entered dxdiag (direct x diagnosis) found out I had Direct X 9.0c
• Clicked to the Display Tab and found out the 3D acceleration was greyed out (not checkable), but Direct Draw Acceleration was fine.
  ***I dont know if this is important but the DDI information was unknown. (in the Driver subcategory in Display tab)***
• At the bottom in the box for Notes, it said :
  

  VBoxDisp.dll is not digitally signed, which means it is not digitally signed by WHQL
  Direct 3D functionality is not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer

• Read that and had no idea what to do. Downloaded Direct X from June 2011 but did not install.
• Came to support .... didn't what everyone was talking about (feeling stupid )

Can you help me? Will give more information, just tell me what you need. Thank you for helping.

Sorry about that... I can see why I would be banned for using the word download. Opengl? Gah. Ill try reinstalling guest installations.

You should be more careful about your misleading use of the word "download". You don't download an XP guest, or the guest additions, you install it (them). By saying that you had downloaded an XP guest you might well have found this thread locked and yourself banned!

You can try uninstalling the guest additions before installing them again in safe mode. I assume that the Mac host has opengl support? (actually, the "Mac Hosts" forum would be a better place to discuss that).

I have the same problem, cannot modify the display impostations even with GUESTAdditions installed in safe mode...

ah ok, it was simple... I had only to change it from the Virtual Box itself instead as from the virtual machine

I am having the same problem as OP. Went through many steps similar. Can someone help me solve this?
I am currently running VirtualBox 4.1.8 (i heard there was a bug, but im being optimistic)
My host is windows7-64bit, my guest is windows7-32bit
I have NVIDIA Control panel for my nvidia GTX560

I unmount and re-install VBoxGuestAdditions.iso by:
host VIrtualBox->File->Virtual Media Manager...->CD/DVD Images->Release->Remove
booted up my guest host with safe mode.
guest VirtualBox->Devices tab->Install Guess Additions...
Start Menu->My Computer->right-click CD Drive(D:)->Open->run VBoxWindowsAdditions
setup->........->check box Direct3D Support->Install
reboot

guest VirtualBox->Machine tab->Settings...->Display-> Enable 3D Acceleration is greyed out, Enable 2D Video Acceleration also greyed out.

How will I be able to select Enable 3D Acceleration?
Do I have to enable some OpenGL on my host machine? If so, how?
Or is all this effort a lost cause.

Enable 2D and 3D acceleration in the VM settings before running the VM. Then reinstall the guest additions. This isn't something I need but I think that even with Win7 you should install the GAs while running the Windows guest in safe mode (WDDM drivers don't need this, I believe older drivers do). Reboot the guest and everything should work.
