unknown version of the X Window System installed

Post by xthx1138 »

I just dist-upgrade'd my Debian guest from squeeze to wheezy. Now when I install guest additions I get:

Warning: unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing
X Window System drivers.

Screen resizing and mouse pointer handling are not working properly, so it seems the X drivers did not install. What can I do to address this?

The current release of VBox doesn't support X Windows 1.11. There is a discusion of this topic in the German language section. There (third post from fixedwheel) you will find a link to a ticket as well as a link to a testing version of the Guest Additions which supports the newer X Windows version.

  1. You can add yourself to the ticket
You may try the testing version of the Guest Additions or
You can wait for the next release of VBox

Upgrade to 4.1.4 that just got released. That has official support for xserver 1.11. Update the GA too.

I found this ticket:

https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/12623

and there was a link in there to a newer guest additions:

https://www.virtualbox.org/download/tes ... -92075.iso

I used that to build GA 4.3.7, and got this promising message:

"Installing X.Org Server 1.15 modules ...done."

After a guest reboot life was good.
