settings gets "stuck" at 55%
hello all - (newbie and first time posting)
all was going very well with virtualbox, and then suddenly....
i would go into settings, and the green status indicator lower-left of the settings page would show 55% and be stuck there. i could click around, but the ok button was grayed out, the cancel button did nothing, and the "X" in the upper right corner did nothing as well.
after ten minutes, it would clear up and appear to work normally. but its pretty irritating to have to wait!
to make matters worse, i tried removing the software and reinstalling it. same problem.
this is a windows 7 box, 64 bit amd.
any ideas?
thanks!

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
screen shot attached. thanks for the reply
i really want to get this resolved, as virtualbox looks like one of the coolest programs i have seen in a long time. (and its far easier to use than VMWare)
i realize the easy solution is a complete reinstall of win-7, but that's cheating.
is there some way to COMPLETELY REMOVE virtualbox, including any bread-crumbs, registry settings, etc? i see there was one hidden file in my directory.

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
Completely removing anything from Windows is a real problem. But why not just fix what you already have?
The progress bar is waiting for more information from you, but i need to ask why you are going the hard route.?
Normally the suggested values are adequate to get the guest up and running. I would delete the guest and start over (make sure that the delete all files) is selected.
Then create a new guest and select the operating system and storage size (use dynamic) and then save and start the guest. At this point the new install wizard should kick in and ask you to place the install media in the virtual CD/DVD. After that it is just follow the bouncing ball.

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
hi -
i have attached a four-part picture of what is happening. this is after a fresh reinstall.
version 4.1.2 r73507
for what its worth, i think virtualbox is absolutely AWESOME and would very much like to see it succeed. although i am not an oracle fan, mysql-gui-workbench and open-office are on my "must-have" software list, and i want to add virtualbox to that list!
thanks

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
when i just click the blue "new" button i am allowed to create a new machine, no problem!
however, when i go into "machine-->settings" of this new installation, we get "stuck" again (attached) and i get "not responding" in the title bar.
i suppose so long as i dont need to make any changes, this will work just fine!

You can't change most things while the machine is running.
You need to do that with it shut down.

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
ok fair enough but i am surprised the option is not greyed-out while the virtual-machine is running if we should not click it.
here is an example (attached) when i clicked "settings" without the virtual-machine running - and again, 55% appears, and virtualbox locks up on me.
look, virtualbox is so cool i can overlook this. but it would be nice to have it fixed.
is there a special "debugger" version i could try out? i am happy to give it a shot.
thanks.

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
There's nothing to overlook. the sections that you can not change are grayed out. look at your screenshot again.
The guest is still running or you would not see the XP is running in the background.
You can not adjust most of the settings while the guest is running or even in saved mode. Look at it like a real PC. Would you change the ram, nic, etc on a machine that is not shut down?
Click on the start button of the Windows guest and select shutdown. Then in the VirtualBox main manager you will be able to change anything you want by clicking on settings.

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
here is what i am getting at. i start up virtualbox, click on "settings" - and the settings box opens up, but the status indicator at the bottom comes up at 55% and just stays there!
i can click around in the settings box, but i cannot click "cancel" or "ok" for several minutes.
perry - before i forget, i want to thank you for helping me.

Re: settings gets "stuck" at 55%
What are the hosts system resources?
Also look at the top and you will see file machine help. They appear gray to me here but that may be due to the settings window. Close the settings window and the click on machine and show log. Then click save and post the log here as (an attachment).
