I know I'm clutching at straws here, but I thought I'd throw this out there in case somebody has came up with a solution.

I am running a MIDI sequencer in Windows 3.11 in VirtualBox but there isn't any way I can think of to get the MIDI out of there and into the host. Ideally it'd be great to link the Soundblaster MIDI output in VirtualBox to an installed MIDI output port.

Maybe somebody's done a mod to the open source VirtualBox or can remember an application that uses the network for MIDI from back then?

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

MIDI output port? It isn't something I ever needed to check out, but didn't MIDI just use an RS232 serial port at 19200bps? VMs can use host serial ports via virtual hardware, it doesn't matter what the guest OS is.

It looks like there are serial to MIDI adapters out there (MIDI uses 5 pin dins), the problem with that would be that the application - Cubasis - I am using only uses standard MIDI interfaces. ie, it gives the installed Soundblaster as an option for MIDI output, but nothing else.

IIRC all MIDI software was hard coded back then to the MIDI/game port on the sound card or if you were lucky you had a port on the IDE controller as well with a DA-15 plug.
Since these would be hardware items I doubt you will get anything to talk to them from the guest or even find software that would allow serial communication for that era. I believe that cakewalk allows USB now but don't really know for sure and more than likely will not work in anything older than XP.
