Is it possible to configure RAID 1 inside the Guest by creating multiple virtual hardrives? Has any one one done this?

Only software RAID. There is no hardware controller for it.

Has anyone had success converting a disk using the Intel "matrix" raid into a VM. I'm not interested in preserving the raid, I'd just like to be able to boot the drive in a VM since the MB died and finding a replacement is close to impossible. Since it was RAID-1 I got the data I need off by mounting one drive on Ubuntu 10.04 using one of those SATA to USB adaptors. The OS in W2K, but there is some old software on there I might still need to run for maintenance and don't relish the thought of trying to find it all and re-install.

Having it raid saved me when one drive died, I replaced and rebuilt without issues, but then the motherboard died and no luck finding a replacement.

That should be strait forward, but you will need to disable the raid services/software before dumping the drive as an image and simply assign a ide inside VBox, then boot into safemode and check eventlogs.
