Problems connecting phys machine to VM

Mac OS X host running VirtualBox 4.1.2 has dual NICs- one NIC connected to my "public" network (en0), the other NIC (en1) connected to a "private" network.
I can connect from the OS X host to a Linux machine on the "private" network, but I cannot connect from a VirtualBox VM running on the OS X host to the same "private" network. The VM is configured to use the bridged interface en1.
I have tried it with and without IP forwarding enabled on the OS X host.
FWIW, I have the same issue with VMware Fusion, which would lead me to believe this is an OS X problem, however I'd like to hear any insight from others on how I can workaround this problem.
