How do you connect Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Wireles

Post by LOOPBACK2 »

Here’s my situation I’m running Windows 2008 R2 in Virtual Box and it won’t connect to the internet. I'm using a wireless connection, and all my other systems work just fine. I have searched google and found one solution, which is adding a wireless LAN feature. Even after adding a wireless LAN feature to Windows server 2008 R2, it still can’t see my NIC. This is very frustrating because my Windows 7 enterprise in Virtual Box works fine. It connects to the internet just fine using Virtual Box, and I had no trouble connecting to the net. I have searched the virtual box forum and haven’t found a solution. The only solution I have found is listed below, and it doesn’t work on my system. I tried it and Windows server 2008 R2 still can’t see my NIC, nor can it be set up to do wireless networking. Anyone have any solutions?

You don't need to connect to the wireless NIC as such. Windows will see your hosts NIC as a wired connection since it is emulated. The part that is more than likely causing you an issue is the adapter type. With the guest shut down (not saved state) go to the guest settings -> network and click the advanced arrow. Then select the InterPro 1000-MT server adapter type. If Windows still can not find an adapter then try the MT desktop. One of them will work.

See screen shot below.

Also take a look at the IP configuration of the Guest. It might have set some static IP that is not in the range of your network. If you configured the Guest to use NAT and a static IP has been configured, it will certainly not work.

No it certainly would not work but the OP states the guest "still can’t see my NIC". Which precludes any addressing scheme.

The Wireless LAN feature is a bit of a red herring. Server 2008 R2 does not support wireless networking by default. Microsoft doesn't really like servers running on wireless. But as Perry pointed out, if you are running it under VirtualBox, it will not see a wireless network. The virtual NIC in the vm will be a wired NIC. It should behave just like the NIC in a Windows 7 vm. It certainly does for me.
