HELP Ubuntu host windows 7 guest keeps shutting down

Post by rjadams60 »

I installed Virtualbox on ubuntu and setup to install Windows 7 as a guest but when it got to the part about installing the disk I got called to work on an emergency. Now every time I try to start Virtualbox it flashes up long enough for me to see Windows 7 shutting down, virtualbox then closes and I get logged out of Ubuntu. I have tried uninstalling VB and reinstalling, even uninstalled VB and installed a different Virtualbox and everytime windows 7 shows up and the same thing happens Windows shutdown then Linux logout.

This is driving me nuts I'm lucky if I even have an hour a day to work on this problem and have been working and hunting the Internet for 2 weeks. I'm so frustrated with this I'm about to just deleate linux all together and go back to windows and I REALY REALY hate Windows, unfortunately there are 1 or 2 programs that I have to have windows for, and I have already tried them in wine and other programs virtualbox was my last chance before dropping linux all together and going back to Windows :-(((((

Please I do not want to have to leave linux

Run: [VBoxManage showvminfo "VMNAME"], and post results here.

How do I do this. I can not get Virtualbox to even stay running long enough to click on any thing, do not find manager in any of the menus and I get a no command from the Terminal.

I have only recently started using Linux.

Ubuntu 11.04, vbox was installed using Ubuntu Software Center. I have no ideal as to where I would find the kernal version.

Ok, lets try this I remove vbox, Then what folders and files to I need to delete in order to remove everything, because vbox is leaving some hidden files. I have uninstalled vbox and hunted around and found a couple of vbox folders and deleted them, now when I install vbox it flashes up and then just exits like it is still looking for something and can't find it. I want to remove every thing related to vbox, I must still be missing a file or folder somewhere.

Oh and I found VBoxManage but there is now no operating system for it to showvminfo on :-(

I don't remember having this much trouble using a Unix system, granted it was the early 80's...lol

I realy am trying to keep my sanity with this so please bear with me. I think some of the ancent programing stuff is getting in the way of me seeing this in a nooby fashion which is what I am to linux

I'm trying to get all the bugs worked out on my laptop, before I install linux on my wife's and son's computers (I'm tired of always chasing virus and adware on there computers...lol)

You need to sort out the VBox installation first, see the FAQ's and Howto's.

Then I'd suggest you take 48 hours to get some sleep and rest, clear your brain. After that think about what you've done to get vbox on the Host and you will figure out where the files might have gone.

Being stressed out and dealing with such a problem at the same time is only going to lead to more problems, so take a break.

I just want to remove vbox and all the hidden files it place on my ubuntu system everything related to or attached to vbox. because it is leaving stuff behind I have searched to no avail. I do not understand why this is complicated.

Use find -iname from the root with some common denominator vbox name and then look inside the folders, surely that will get you where ever the files are. Or re-install vbox and then de-install it strait after, that might also work.
Or get the proper install package from the vbox site, that might also work to get it working properly.

Still no luck, I have decided to wipe my drive and start all over again. Thank you for the help. I can only assume that I screwed something up so bad that this is my only choice. again thank you for the help
