Windows 8 Developer Preview

Post by aaronmchale »

I downloaded Windows 8 Developer Preview from http://dev.windows.com/, ran the .iso file in a new Virtual Machine and it crashes just after the "Windows 8 Developer Preview" with the status code: 0xc0000225, and info: An unexpected error occure.

Has anyone else tried it yet? If so, did you get the same problem? Can anyone suggest a possible fix for this problem?

Thanks
Aaron

I got the win8 preview to work by setting Chipsert=ICH9 under Settings-System. That's the only setting I changed, everything else was default (used Win7 in the new-machine wizard).

Seems to work pretty well. Make sure to up the resolution to >= 1024 to try the Metro stuff.

I downloaded the 32bit version and tried it. Same result as you I think: "loading files", black screen for a long time, "Windows Developer Preview" screen, then repeated STOP codes (0xA and something else I couldn't catch) - "please hold down power button", resetting doesn't actually help.

Changing to ICH9 didn't help. Moving hdd from SATA to IDE did not help. Vt-x off, nada. Turned IO APIC off, got el zilcho on the success front.

I guess it's not ready for primetime yet.

Guess, although it seemed to work on all the machines and configuration that they demoed Windows 8 on, might just be a lack of support for the virtual hardware that Virtual Box use.

I had exactly the same problem until I set my Chipset to ICH9. After that change everything works perfectly.

Host OS is Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
Guest OS is Windows Developer Preview with developer tools English, 64-bit (x64).
VirtualBox VM OS Type is set to WIndows 7 (64bit).

So, can anybody explain why this worked? (It worked for me too.)

I just installed Windows 8 Developer. Was my first Virtualbox install ever actually. I didn't change any settings except allocating 1gig of ram. Installed from the ISO of the 32bit version.

So far I like it. I can see how great Windows 8 will be on tablets. I love the new cleaner feeling interface on everything.

I have the x64 Developer Preview installed as well, but mouse integration doesn't work well with regard to the right hand "Charms Menu". Also, can't install the Guest additions in order to enable wide screen aspect ratios. Not the best experience to be stuck with 4:3 ratios on my 16:10 monitor. Also, the OS stalls quite frequently (several minutes at a time) and then comes back to life. Obviously not the most stable performer on it's own and certainly not fully optimized to work with VirtualBox. Still exciting to check out Windows 8!
