I've seen this too and retrograded as a result.

my host is Mandriva 2010.2. x64
guest is windows 7_64

I've seen it with 4.0.12 all the way through 4.1.2
am I doing something silly with my settings?

It seems to me to have something to do with the video. because when it freezes, I can go to "machine" menu item.. select "Close"
and then select cancel, and the screen shrinks down to 1024x768 and the screen is black with short horizontal lines (densely populated) of color on a black background. it looks like what I imagine an XP windows boot up screen would look like if it got scrambled.
if it happens again, I'll up load a screen shot.

00:23:37.085 ERROR [COM]: aRC=NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED (0x8000ffff) aIID={09eed313-cd56-4d06-bd
and then in the close machine dialog, I clicked cancel..

00:23:45.990 Changing the VM state from 'SUSPENDED' to 'RESUMING'.
00:23:45.990 AIOMgr: Endpoint for file '/home/data/vm/Windows_7.vdi' (flags 000c0723) created successfully
00:23:45.996 Changing the VM state from 'RESUMING' to 'RUNNING'.
