Failed to open a session for the virtual machine

I installed and successfully opened a virtual XP machine on my Windows 7 (32 bit) PC. After I played with it a while, I saved and closed it and exited VirtualBox. When I came back a week later, I get this error:

Code: Select all

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine andy_pc_vm.

Cannot open host device 'F:\' for readonly access. Check the permissions of that device (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}
On the host machine, drive F is a CD drive. I put a XP Installation CD in drive F: and I can see files on it. But I still get the Open error on VirtualBox.

I'm running version 4.1.2 r73507

Sounds like you save the guest with the CD/in the virtual drive.
You can either put the CD back in the virtual drive and then start the guest or you can use the abort to release the saved state and boot the guest normally.

Thank you. I removed drive F: from the VM config and did a power up. However, I need the drive to do other installations and I can't figure out how to add it back in.

Instead of removing the drive you could have selected to remove the media from the drive.
No matter just click the cd icon (looks like one platter instead of 3) to add the drive back to the controller.
