Can't get USB device working on WinXp guest

Hello, I'm experiencing the following problem.

I have some USB device. It connects to my host system (WinXP) without any problem.
But when I try to connect it to the VM the guest OS (WinXP) gives the error (a balloon in the tray): "Unrecognized USB device", so I even could not try to install the driver for this device.
Corresponding USB filter is created for this device, and VirtualBox USB driver installation stage was also made.

By the way, all works fine on VMWare (device is recognized and Add Hardware Wizard appeared), but for many reasons I would prefer if it would work under VirtualBox :)

Is it probably some log to get the reason of this problem or is it any known workarounds for it?

Thanks in advance,
Ilya,

You failed to say what the device was.

I guess the info about the device will not be much usable for you.
This is a medical gauge with rather simple protocol to transfer data to computer thru USB (just commands to control pipe and interrupt reads).

If this is not a device type that XP has native support for then it can never be "recognized" until you have installed the drivers. I can't think of any circumstance in which XP (host or guest) can see that a USB device is plugged in, fail to recognize it, and yet not prompt you for a driver. Best guest is that indeed it did prompt for a driver, and you cancelled the driver install dialog. In that case you might try going into the guests device manage and force it to search for new hardware.

Of course, I understand it, but I can't reach the stage in which Add Hardware Wizard appears.
The only thing I get is the balloon

and the window after clicking on the balloon:

(highlighted item means "Unknown USB device").

Running Device Manager and refreshing the devices configuration gives no result except the same as above.
And, sure, I have installed VirtualBox USB on the host machine.

Right click on the device with the yellow question mark and select update drivers.

The window on the image is NOT the Device Manager, it's window with the list of USB devices connected to certain USB hub. So, right-clicking on the question mark has no effect.

The recommendation below this list could be translated as "Try to reconnect the device. If Windows couldn't recognize it, replace the device". But the reason is NOT in the device - as I mentioned above, it works on VMWare virtual machine.

I wonder if that is precisely the problem. AIUI VirtualBox virtualizes the USB controller, I don't use VMware, but perhaps it works in a similar way. If so then it's probably a different USB controller, hence moving from VMWare to VBox kills it. Perhaps you need to get the XP setup CD and repair the installation.

Btw, VMware VMs are not guaranteed to work right away in VirtualBox. If this is the only problem you had then you can consider yourself lucky!
