Server were are hosting the VM crashed

Post by WebTeam »

Hello all,

I was using a ubuntu 11.04 for hosting a VM (virtualbox 4.1.2), the linux has crashed and I lost a lot of files.
Actually, I have the .Virtualbox directory with all files :

VirtualBox.xml
VirtuaBox.xml-prev
xpti.dat
compreg.dat
/Harddisks/SBS2008.vdi (80Go file size)
/Machines/SBS2008/SBS2008.xml
/Machines/SBS2008/SBS2008.xml-prev
/Machines/SBS2008/Snapshots/{08f1f352-0fe7-41fd-83c8-15af28545e48}.sav
/Machines/SBS2008/Snapshots/????? name crashed ??????.vdi (44Go file size)

The problem I haven how to reuse it to have VM working and/or find some files included in the VM Harddisk ?

I tried to convert SBS2008.vdi into a hdd file, I find my C and D drive but all files in D drive were not present.

Are they is the other VDI file ? I tried the same operation on it but it doesn't work.

I also tried to use file into a new VM were I rename some files, I see one second my login page of my SBS2008 but I receive the following error :

Échec de l'ouverture de session pour la machine virtuelle ss.

Could not open the medium '/Users/WebTeam/VirtualBox VMs/ss/Snapshots/{6e06c7a4-850f-4548-932e-21be561bdd26}.vdi'.

VD: error VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND opening image file '/Users/WebTeam/VirtualBox VMs/ss/Snapshots/{6e06c7a4-850f-4548-932e-21be561bdd26}.vdi' (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).

Please help

Thanks

Pierre

I suggest downloading the latest CloneVDI tool (see sticky in "Windows Hosts" forum). This is a Windows application, but it will run well on a Linux host under Wine. Use CloneVDI to clone the most recent snapshot (NOT the base vdi). This should create a merged VDI which you can build a new VM around, and it should recover all of your files.

First, CloneVDI does not have that error message. Were you using the correct tool? Note that I did NOT mean VBoxManage.

Second, if the snapshot file is corrupted that that's the end, unless you happen to have a backup. Otherwise you must clone one of the older snapshot files.
