(Solved) Windows 7 host/Windows XP Pro guest bridging.

Post by IuseVB »

So I'm trying to create a bridging network connection between a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit host and a Windows XP Pro 32-bit guest. I change Adapter 1 from NAT to Bridged Adapter, and start the guest OS, but it tells me I have limited to no connectivity. My Win 7 network card is an embedded Intel Pro 1000/PL. I would be happy to give any required information.

Thanks,

IUseVB

Have you read Chapter 6 Virtual networking in your VirtualBox users guide?
Adapter should be Intel Pro 1000/MT Desktop for Windows 7 guests.

I've read chapter 6, and it's an XP guest, Win 7 is the host. It worked fine using NAT, if that helps any. I've tried all the adapters, and they give the same problem.

Do you have a router in the network?
What are the settings for the guest network?

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.
Also the guests log file (as an attachment)

Yes, I have a router.

What settings do I need to look at for my guest network?

The details are:

Looks like it should work. I would check or temporarily disable firewalls, virus software, and check the router to see if it is allowing the connection.

Thanks Perryg. :)
Temporarily disabled my antivirus and firewall, and it worked. Does anyone know the correct settings for Outpost Firewall Pro 7.1? I tried to allow all network access for virtualbox.exe, but that didn't work. Would really like suggestions, or should I take this to the Outpost forums? Deactivated Content Filtering http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=8669, but no luck. :(

:!: Solved :D

I found the instructions here: http://www.agnitum.com/support/kb/artic ... id=1000061

The answer from there is:
If you use Bridged mode, create the following global rule to allow traffic from the virtual machine:

1. Click Settings > Network Rules > System-Wide Rules > Low-Level Rules.
2. Click Add and create the following rule:

Where the protocol is IP
and IP type is TCP, UDP, ICMP and local address is (specify your virtual machine IP address or the subnet to which it belongs, for example, 192.168.5.0 or 192.168.5.0 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0)
Allow
Click OK to save the changes.
I used a static IP on the guest, and this worked like a charm. 8)
