See section 9.8.2 of the user manual (VPD config). You might also want to search for "DMI" - search using google, as internal search doesn't like 3 letter words.

Incidentally, speaking as a software engineer, it would be a really dumb software engineer who only used one easily faked string to detect a VM environment. If the app really wants to detect a VM environment, it can. There are many possible checks, and any half decent app will use several.

I don't know the details - faking the ID strings for a drive is not something I've needed to do, and anyway the syntax of VBoxManage is in the manual. I'm sure you'll work it out.

What you ideally need is a tool that reports VPD info to you, that way you can set a string and see which part of the report it affects.

I see you have deleted your question and followup, replacing them with content free stubs.

That is very bad form. This forum is not intended to provide you with free personal support - the idea is that the question and answer should remain for the benefit of future readers.

For the benefit of future readers: the conversation went as follows :-

OP (paraphrased from memory): "I see that VirtualBox identifies the hard disk as "VBOX HARDDISK" to the guest. I have an application that detects that it's running in a virtual environment, and I think it's detecting the hard disk string. Can I rename it?".

Me (see first answer).

OP : < suggests a possible VBoxManage command line >. Is this correct ?

Me (see second answer).

Obviously, the OP doesn't want his questions to be seen here. If I see another topic of you on this board where you do exactly the same, you will get banned.
