Hi! I've searched and not found this exact question being asked before.

I'm running Ubuntu as host on my eeepc901 and was hoping to install Win7 as guest to get around my networking issues.

Basically, despite reading that my USB broadband dongle works out of the box with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, i've been unable to get it working, despite scouring the forums and trying various tweeks. Ubuntu recognises the dongle and claims to be connected, with the correct light flashing on the dongle, but it isn't actually connected.

So... I was wondering if plugging the dongle in whilst using the guest OS would allow the dongle to run through the guest
If not i'll have to setup a dual-boot =/

I would forget about trying to run WIndows 7 as a vm on an eee900! You just don't have the necessary power in the processor.

Fix problems on the host, dont use crappy solutions to work around.

Or ditch Ubuntu and install Win7 natively. Personally I think mere mortals will find Windows a lot easier to use, that being who it's designed for.

Yes, it can be done. If it will work completely depends on the device, some don't work that well, others require empty USB filters to capture both devices (one is mass storage, other is the modem) properly. But using Windows 7 as Guest is pushing your netbook to it's limits. Windows XP would be far better, or Windows 7 starter (which is very, very slimmed down, and doesn't allow to be virtualised).

Though despite it can work, it's better to fix it on your Host, or change OS where it is guaranteed to work on.

It seems I will need to search for a Linux distro that my dongle will work with then go for a dual boot with Win7.

Win7 requires much RAM, do you have that in a Asus EEE pc? At least 2GB RAM is needed.
