Another SD Reader Question

I have spent the best part of today, and yesterday, reading manuals and forum posts but no-one seems to have posted a solution.
I have the latest (4.1.2) Virtual Box with an Ubuntu 11.04 image running on a '10 Macbook Pro host, running OS X Lion.
I need access to the SD reader but every time I request access to it, I receive the device 'is busy with a previous request'. I have the latest guest additions, latest extension pack, have tried adding the device and I have ensured the SD card is ejected from my Mac. I know this has been posted a lot but I cannot afford to lose yet another day trying to resolve this tomorrow so any guidance is greatly appreciated.
