Windows XP x64 guest reboots during file drag and drop

Host: Windows 7 SP1 64bit VirtualBox 4.1.2
Guest: Windows XP Pro SP2 64bit, clean install, default VirtualBox options except 1GB RAM, using VT-x acceleration
The virtual machine reboots when I drag a file from one location to another in Windows Explorer or My Computer. For example if I open My Computer to the c drive, create a folder called test, create a text file test.txt and drag the test.txt file into the test folder the virtual machine immediately reboots.
This problem only happens if the guest additions are installed.
This problem does not happen with Windows 7 64 bit guests or Windows XP 32bit guests.
This problem is in VirtualBox 4.1.2 and 4.1.0 but not in 4.0.10 or earlier versions. I have not tested 4.0.12.

All operations are done on the Guest side I presume, so you're not doing any attempt for drag'n'drop from Host to Guest or vice versa (that doesn't work anyway).
Now if the Guest reboots with that action, then it's obvious something is wrong with the OS itself. If it doesn't happen when you don't have the GA installed, you may try to pinpoint the problem by disabling clipboard sync.
Note that XP x64 never really caught on on the market and is therefore not completely supported. Have you checked the VM log right when a reboot occurs? Attach it here if you can't make heads nor tails from it.

I have the same issue with Host Ubuntu 10.04 x64 with VBox 4.1.2 and Guest Windows XP x64.
Just want to drag'n'drop inside the VM and it reboots.
The Windows Guest has all updates installed + current GA.

Just updated the GA of one of my VMs, created a folder on the desktop, dragged another file from the desktop into the window with the folder open and no problems. Now I don't have a 64 bit VM, my system can't handle that (will get a new one that can in a few weeks). The VM I tested with is XP Pro 32 bit.
It's just as the OP explains, no problem except when it's XP x64. Open a bug report in the
Bugtracker (separate account needed). Do search for the problem so you don't open a duplicate report.

I can confirm this issue as well, although it does not reboot my PC it pegs the CPU and error logs show a lot of suspend, resume, suspend.... unitl I force kill it.
I will report this and post the link in a little while, but I need to test this on a few other guests first as I think I have seen this on a 32 bit guest as well.

Sasquatch,
All operations are done on the guest side. I am not trying to drag and drop between the host and the guest.
I tried disabling the clipboard sync (set shared clipboard to disabled) and it had no effect. When I drag and drop with the guest editions installed the virtual machine reboots.
I see that Perryg already opened a bug report and submitted a log file. If you still need my log file let me know.
I can also confirm the behavior Perryg reported. If I assign 2 cpus to the guest, it hangs with 2 host cpus at 100% usage instead of rebooting when I attempt to drag and drop a file.

Sending in another log file will give the devs more to work with. Two different systems, two different environments, same guest OS. Better chance of finding a match and fix.

I confirm this issue.
My host system is Windows XP 64-bit SP2 with latest MS updates running on Core2 Quad with 4 GB RAM, with S-ATA HDDs.
My pointing device is A4Tech G7-750 wireless USB mouse with the latest "8-in-Right" driver from the manufacturer installed (maybe this matters).
My guest is Windows XP 64-bit SP2 with latest MS updates, it uses 1 virtual NIC in Bridging mode.
Drag-and-Drop issue was first discovered when I tried to move Recycle Bin from the one place of my guest's Desktop to another place on the same desktop.
VirtualBox just rebooted my Virtual Machine.
Then it happened again when I tried to drag and drop a file from a folder to a subfolder on my guest system.
I tried to clean-reinstall guest OS, but nothing changed.
I'm not experienced in VirtualBox logging, so I can only describe the apparent symptoms: I press the left mouse button over an object in Explorer and hold left button, then I move mouse, and the guest system seems to freeze (there is no guest I/O activity according to VirtualBox indicators or any guest screen activity, such as files beeing downloaded or uploaded in P2P applications), untill I release the left button, and guest immediately reboots.

One would think that the mouse driver on the Host may be the cause. But I know Perry well enough that he doesn't install such things if it's not absolutely required, yet he has the same problem. And I doubt everyone here has the same mouse, host OS, etc. Something is definitely broken here.

Hi,
Ran into this same issue today.
Host = Windows 7 64-bit
Guest = Windows XP x64
VirtualBox 4.1.2
When I drag any icon on the desktop within the VM, it freezes and I have to manually shutdown the VM and restart. Really annoying! I see the bug has been raised, will it be fixed anytime soon?
I also saw this behavior on a VirtualBox 4.0

I can confirm that I have this issue without any mouse drivers installed on my Windows 7 x64 host. I'm using the mouse support built into Windows with a Logitech MX518 USB mouse.

I will add another data point to this issue: I have experienced the same problem on the following environment.
Host = Ubuntu 10.10 x64
Guest = WinXP Pro x64 bit Edition w/ SP2
VirtualBox = 4.1.2 with current Guest Additions and Oracle Extensions
This is a simple Guest definition: 1024 MB memory, 1 CPU, no 2D or 3D video enabled, a single Bridged network adapter, no host filesharing, bidirectional clipboard enabled, no special software or drivers installed.
Problem = Trying to drag and drop files in Windows caused the Guest to freeze requiring a manual powerdown via the VBox console.
I have also experienced a similar issue with a Windows 7 x64 guest. However, it is not mouse-based file operations that causes the freezing. It is consistently caused when I use the drop down menus of a small utility application (the iDrive backup utility,
www.idrive.com, version 3.4.1).

Run into the same problem today when setup up a clean new XP 64 env.
Host: Win7 x64 SP1
Guest: XP x64 SP2, 8GB RAM, 1 CPU, VT-x enabled, Nested Paging enabled, IO APIC enabled, no audio, no USB, GA 4.1.0 installed
VirtualBox: 4.1.0
In explorer, try to drag drop a file into another folder, when I start moving the mouse with left button holded, the guest reset and cannot boot normaly, the Windows startup progress screen seems can never end. I have to reset guest by cold boot. Try drag drop the second time, the same problem.

I see that there is a showstopper bug logged for this problem. Please consider the following additional information. I believe this is a Guest Additions bug that is not just apparent in a WinXP 64 bit guest but also evident in a Windows 7 64 bit guest. As I stated in my earlier post above, I am consistently freezing my Windows 7 64bit guest when I run the iDrive utility. As soon as I mouse over the utility, the guest freezes 100% of the time. (Leaving the utility running without mousing over it does not invoke the freeze.) I tried changing many VM settings, one at a time, and nothing prevents the freezing of the guest upon mousing over the application. However, when I revert from Guest Additions 4.1.2 back to Guest Additions 4.0.12, mousing over the iDrive utility no longer freezes the guest and everything works fine. This is indeed a showstopper defect, in my opinion, in Guest Additions 4.1.2.
