usb devices not working under guest OS

Hi
I just installed Virtual Box 4.1.0 with extension pack in my Mac Lion OS and started running windows XP as guest. Setup worked fine, and windows, as expected, runs just nice and smooth under VB in my Mac.
However, I cannot use any of the devices plugged by USB to my system. The point is that they're recognized by VB (I can see them under the VirtualBox menu "USB devices", but still they're not recognized inside the guest OS. For example, my scanners and external HD drive are not seen by Windows XP, although they're visible in the VB menu and fully functional under the host Lion in the same time. I tried to create specific filters for the USB, I also tried to use the USB 2 extension, but nothing seems to work.
After reading around, in this and other forums, I can see that this is apparently a common problem, and could be explained by permission issues, however I'm not an expert of the Lion Terminal so I prefer not to dig it.
Anyone can help me with that? I'd be really grateful...
thanks and kind regards,
M.
