Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
Here is the info of my VM and host.
Host: Ubuntu 10.10
Guest: Windows XP professional with SP3
My machine (which is old): Intel E2180 + 3G ram + NV 7600gs + 1T sata HD
Virtualbox ver: 4.1
In the manual, I learned that swithing from IDE to SATA controller would increase HD speed and reduce CPU usage.
Then I did exactly the same as decribed here. http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=42829
I uesed Intel Rapid Storage Technology ver. 10.1.0.1008 for Windows XP.
Everything seemed to work fine. But I am feeling a lag especially when installing windows softwares. And sometimes the vm just suddenly shut down and couldn't even reboot itself.
I just wanna know what is the cause of this? Is it my computer is too old or I messed up any configurations somewhere?

Re: Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
What you need is IATA89ENU (version 8.9.0.1023).

No luck in my attempt.vbox4me2 wrote:What you need is IATA89ENU (version 8.9.0.1023).
I downloaded IATA89EUN.exe from here
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ ... 4&lang=eng
But when I tried to install, an error pops up, saying things like:
"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.
Setup will exit."
confused......
Re: Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
I usually don't run the installer but add the drivers manually, but anyway, switch back to IDE, IATA should run without a sata controller for preparation, after that switch back to sata.

Re: Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
Thanks for your quick reply!
But currently I am under IDE. And problem showed as stated earlier.
I am curious though, when you say you would just manually add the driver, do you mean add to the install CD before installation OR after XP is installed?
If there's a way to just add the driver after system is installed, i definitely wanna give it a try!

Re: Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
See the SATA issues section in the QuickClick FAQ and apply it with the version I mentioned.

Re: Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
Acutally I just found a mistake I made. I needed to add an SATA controller to the virtual machine before trying to install the driver.
Now the IATAENU89 was properly installed (I guess). Now I'm gonna use it a for little while to see if the lag and instability persist.
Thank you man! You were of great help!

Well, still the same situation...
I'll stick to IDE I guess... sigh...

Re: Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
Check the driver version in device manager, is the VM disk set as AHCI and sata port 0 ? There might be driver parts left from previous try's, do a search.

Re: Vbox crashes when using SATA controller
You're awesome man! Thanks!!
I checked and all the settings are correct. So perhaps the problem did lie in previous attempts. Then I just restored to a recent snapshot before even installing the driver.
And also I re-installed the extension pack 4.1
Now it seemed to work fine! I'll keep on testing to see if it really become stable!
