wim to VirtualBox

Post by rwaldron21 »

Hi all,
I have an image of a windows server 2003 taken using imagex.. file is called image.wim.
Anyone know how to import/run this image in virtualbox.
Microsoft has a script called wimtovdk but it doesn't work for me.

What I did try was to create a new VM, used windowsPE ISO as the source.
When VM boots up to windpws PE I run diskpart.
My problem is that Diskpart only shows that I have d:\ cdrom drive and no other partitions.
If I had a c:\ partition I could then apply image.wim to the VM ?

Any help please
Ray..

I'm not familiar with that tool, but if it's a disk imaging tool then they all tend to have similar features.

If you have a hard drive then it should be visible to the image restore tool, so first step is of course to double check that you included a hard drive of sufficient capacity in your VM recipe.

"C:\" is how Windows and DOS tends to refer to the main partition on your first drive. However there is no partition on the drive if you haven't installed an OS yet, so don't expect to see "C:\" mentioned anywhere. What you might see mentioned is "drive 0" or IDE0 something along those lines.

Windows PE / Diskpart may be useless. Typically a disk imaging app will come with a rescue CD that you're supposed to use when disaster strikes.

Hiya and thx for replying..
What I am trying to do is almost identical to here http://dombarnes.com/2009/03/howto-inst ... re-fusion/
but this is for vmware.. I am trying to do the same in virtual box..

My problem is that when I run Diskpart ( after windows PE CD Boots up) the only drive I have ( Drive 0) is D (CDROM) that I have just booted from.
If I could see another partition I could then apply wim file to it...
I think I am going about it the wrong way..
This is what I did in VirtualBOX

Create New Virtual machine
OS server 2003
Ceate new harddisk (8G)
Finish
Start VM ( First run wizard starts)
select Instalation media ( I select windowsPE Bootable ISO )
Finish
VM boots up windowsPE
run diskpart
list volume
Volume 0 D cd_ROM

where's my 8G Virtual HD ?
If it shows up here I could run imagex to apply the imag.wim ?

If I try create a virtual disk now in dispart using create vdisk file=c:\disk1.vhd
I get "the system cannot find the path specified" which makes sense since I have no c:\ drive?

any other ideas?

Sorry, as I said before I'm not familiar with the specific tool you mention, nor have I ever tried using DiskPart/WinImage from a WinPE disk (I used Acronis, masochists may use CloneZilla). I think I've given you several things to check and paths to explore, beyond that I don't think I can add anything useful to what I've already said.

It's possible that someone else is more familiar with imagex etc.

HI rwaldron21

I have had the same issue as you and I have managed to get a way round it.

If you are running W.7 PRO or Ultimate, if you open the disk management console and attach a VHD by "action, attach VHD" then attach the vhd, Initialise it and then format it.
open the VM and if you run "list volume" it will now show up.

hope this helps.

Regards

Scott
