New guy needs help connecting to the internet with a VM

Post by 2sam10 »

Hi!

For starters, it will soon become obvious that I am very new to this, so your patience is appreciated. :D
I am using a Mac running OS X Lion as my physical computer (I think you all refer to that as a host, but I am not 100% sure on that...) and my VM is OS type Windows 2003 and I am running it using TinyXP (see attached photo). I have read through the manuals and all, but I cannot figure out how to get my VM to connect to the internet. It is all kind of gibberish to me. :) I am including a screenshot of what the 'Network Adapter' part of the settings screen looks like because most of the settings are 'grayed out' so I cannot click on them. If someone could please describe to me what I need to do in simple terms, I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

If I google tinyxp, this is the first hit

Pirated Windows more impressive than the real thing

The network setting you have is the correct one as far as VirtualBox is concerned.

haha! Now I feel stupid, I have never actually Googled to find out about TinyXP. My apologies. :)

And thanks for that tip about the network settings. For some reason, however, it is still not working...

TinyXP strips out most of the drivers that you will need. It may still work though - just change the network strings from NAT to bridged. If that doesn't work, sorry, you'll have no chance!

Thanks! So far it isn't working, but I am not sure that I have the settings completely correct. I am attaching a screenshot of the settings that I changed it to from my understanding of what you just said. Are these correct?

Thanks again...

You are in the right area.
1. Tick the box to say cable connected. Nothing will happen without that.
2. Promiscuous mode - no idea what it does but mine is set to deny.

Okay. Thank you for your help. So far it is not working. Any idea of what I should do about the drop-down menu labeled 'Name:'? That's my last resort...

No sorry, reached the end of my very limited knowledge.
If you an find a student, they can get a win7 licence from their uni library for £10. Otherwise try softwareforstudents.co.uk and get it for £38.
Good luck!
