Quicken on Lion - backup throws a write error

I'm running Quicken 2010 on Windows XP SP3 on Lion OS X.

It's worked fine for a long time but either the latest VirtualBox or Lion tickles a "Unable to create the destination file" when I try to backup (within Quicken) to a shared folder. It writes a few meg but chokes on the rest. Quicken is the one reporting the error, not the underlying OSes. Backup to a 'local' XP folder is okay and I can copy the new (100+ meg) file to the shared folder 'in' XP w/o error.

Any suggestions on what/where I might look for help?

Developers using LabView were having similar issues with the shared folder. Try implementing the solution provided by cpschnuffel. Post back if it works.

Thanks for the pointer.

Of course I don't know the create/open/write/close flow that Quicken is using but the referenced discussion talks about overwriting an existing file. My backup is a 'new' file with a new name -- but only about 5 meg of 100 meg gets written. Maybe Quicken writes it in several chunks? (I expect the successful 'copy' writes it in one swoop.)

And alas, the referenced discussion and the links from there talk about a long-standing problem. Mine is new to me. My WinXP VM has been around since February 2010.

I'll have to read up on the suggested 'network' solutions. It's true that I'm referencing \\Vboxsvr\quicken which maps to a folder on the OS X side of the fence.

I guess I can try it on an older version of VirtualBox. (Not tonight.) Any thoughts on whether a 4.1 image will run on 4.0.x?

I was pointing to that thread because the solution detailed creating a network share on the host and then accessing it from the guest, which is what I am suggesting you try. Another thing to check is if you updated the guest additions after updating to version 4.1

Congratulations! You get the cigar!

I thought I'd updated the Guest Additions but I hadn't. Now the 'backup' runs to completion and the file size is appropriate.

BTW, I looked at the dates in the program files\oracle directory (they were old), but how do I query VirtualBox to see the date/version I'm running?

THANKS!

Clarification on my previous post. I know how to see the version number of VirtualBox. The question is: how do I check the version of the Guest Additions?

Just take a look at the installed software in your XP VM

Edit: you may also query using the VBoxManage command using > VBoxManage guestproperty get "VM-Name" "/VirtualBox/GuestAdd/Version" <
More info can be found here

Glad I could be of assistance, as far as the cigar goes, a genuine habanos please
