Inaccessible Windows guest, can't remove additions ISO

Hi there... I've been searching around for quite a while now, but I can't find the solution to my problem. When open vbox, I get my one VM, "Windoze" showing up as inaccessible. The error message is

And I opened the Virtual Media Manager. However, upon selecting the CD/DVD tab, there's nothing there.

What can I do?

Was the problem caused by my upgrade? It showed up as inaccessible in 4.0.12 and then I upgraded to 4.1.0, and now it might be even worse. Is there any way I can recover my VM?

Click the Discard arrow to delete the saved state and then click the Start arrow to cold boot the virtual machine.

In your General settings on the Advanced tab, try disabling the Remember Runtime Changes.

Or, check the Storage settings and see if VBoxGuestAdditions.iso is attached to your IDE Controller and if so, remove it.

Even when I select my VM, none of the buttons at the top are highlighted except the new VM button. I can't get to the VM settings, and I can't remove the ISO from the Virtual Media Manager, I get an error that tells me "The object functionality is limited." I'll upload a screenshot of that as well.

Maybe it's a permissions problem? Try running the Repair Disk Permissions using the Disk Utility. Make sure you're not running the VBox app when you do this.

If that's not the problem then it might be some corruption in the XML files.

OK... so it isn't a permissions issue. I repaired the permissions, verified the disk, and uninstalled and then reinstalled virtualbox 4.1.0. Now, I have a blank virtualbox main window. However, when I double click the .vbox file in the VM folder, virtualbox gives me the message

Medium '/path/Windoze.vdi' cannot be closed because it is still attached to 1 virtual machines.

If I click new, I can select the old VDI file, but it still says inaccessible. This is really infuriating...

I receive this error when running under winxp, 4.0.12.

When i go tot he virtual media manager, I get the "object functionality limited" message. but if I press refresh the object odes disappear.

However the VM will still not start, and restarting virtualbox causes the VBoxGuestAdditions to reappear.

My vms that do not have guest additions work fine.

This is my workaround creating a new VM and reusing the .vdi.

WARNING: Before you follow my instructions below, backup all files you modify!

Here is what I did:

Exit VirtualBox and go to the directory where you VM is saved and oben the .vbox-File. It's an XML file and there is an element called "DVDImages". Delete its child element that describes the iso file containing the guest additions. Save the file and restart VirtualBox. You should now be able to launch your VM again. However, the first thing I did was shutting down the guest system and terminating Virtualbox again completely to make sure that config files are updated and everything is in a legal state.
