External DVD Drive - work ok?

Got my XP virtualbox set up on mac os x lion, very pleased it's worked on an external USB HDD so i dont taint the mac with that rubbish.

Unfortunately i need XP to run some Sony HD Cam software, so i need a DVD writer too.

My Mac Air doesn't have one so i'm about to buy this : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SE-S084 ... 531&sr=8-1

Do external USB DVD Writers work just as well as internal ones with virtual box; i understand that i have to configure the virtualbox to allow USB 2.0 and select the devices to pass through. That is all sorted, my HD cam via USB is working great.

Just need to check an external USB DVD drive will work in VB before i buy it.

Thanks

Unless someone here has used that exact drive then I doubt your question can be answered satisfactorally. And even with the same drive, if their host setup is different from yours then who knows what the effect is.

Personally I would not use a DVD writer on a USB port - period.

i own a USB 2.0 DVD writer, for curiosity i made a test:
Linux host, VBox 4.1.0, XP guest, Liteon eSAU208 writer passed to the guest by click on the USB symbol bottom of the guests window. Installed writer software form CD in writer, then successfully wrote gparted live CD image to CD-RW media
HTH, and of course YMMV
