Hi to all,
I've installed VirtualBox 4.1 this weekend. After updated the VirtualBox Guest Additions to 4.1 version all graphic software like Paint.NET started to freeze the guest system when runned. I've tested a virtual machine with the previous 4.0.4 guest additions and there is no problem in that case. I'm using a Windows7 64bit guest system under a VirtualBox 4.1 on Ubuntu 11.04 64bit host. Have you encountered the same problem? Solutions?
Thanks to all in advance
Antonio

Re: Windows freeze opening graphic software
I have the same Problem.
Host: Ubuntu 10.04 x64, AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945, 8 GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 8300, VirtualBox 4.1.0
Guest: Windows 7 SP1 32bit, 2 CPUs, 3 GB RAM, 128 MB Video, 2D and 3D enabled, Guest addtions with WDDM driver
First time I started Aero Test and the screen flashed a little bit and the VM ended up hard with "aborted".
Next time I started Poser 6, then only the Software crashed.
Then I set the number of CPUs in the VM to one. Poser 6 now started and worked correctly. But running the Aero Test resulted in "freeze" of the host. I could still move the mouse cursor but could not click on anything or switch to a console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 or other combinations.

I am seeing the same problem on a Mac OSX host. The guest video stops responding for a short time and then comes back. Only started happening since upgrading to 4.1.

I've experienced a similar problem, with the notable difference that when I opened Paint.NET, Windows (7) completely crashed, resulting in the VM resetting itself.

Re: Windows freeze opening graphic software
With 3D support enabled VBox will delegate the (3D) graphics request to the hosts graphics driver.
If this will work correctly depends on the 3D commands used by the guest application and the 3D implementation of the host.

I have exactly the same Problem. Host Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) with VBox 4.1.2, Guest Win 7 Ultimate SP1.Thuvsa wrote:I've experienced a similar problem, with the notable difference that when I opened Paint.NET, Windows (7) completely crashed, resulting in the VM resetting itself.
Installation of Paint.net 3.5.8 is ok. Starting it freezes the complete VM. After the first installation with automatically starting Paint.NET the VM was auto rebooting.
I've neither 3D nor 2D acceleration activated.
Any suggestions?
Additional Info: The following is very interesting. When the VM ist not in full screen mode, I can start Paint.net without freezing. Switching to full screen brings a blue screen! Very nice!

Re: Windows freeze opening graphic software
It's not 2D/3D acceleration in the virtualbox machine settings that cause the issue - it's the setting in the Guest additions - You probably had it ticked when you installed the package, and need to reinstall them and NOT tick the "Direct 3D support (experimental)" option, then reboot the guest.
