win 98 with no 256 colors

i have been searching the net for about 6 hours now and have nothing that solved this porblem:
i wanted to play a very old game (1992 releas - bought it when i was in erope in 1999)
so i decided to try win 98 for this
i made the virtual machine and installed win 98 se (so i would not bother with dos stuff)
the installation of the game went great
but i cannot run the game because it needs 256 (8 bit if its more comfortable for you) colors to run (says that when i run the exe)
but i only have 2 options 16 and 2
i managed to acually get a 256 option by going to control panel->display->settings->adapter->change and then i asked for a list of drivers i chosed super vga which i read is compatible with any hardware (or somthing like that) it asks me to restart and after it does i have the 256 color option when i choose it and press ok again it asks to restart again - when it starts it says i have a problem with the display settings and that the adapter type isnt correct or that the settings cannot work with my hardware (but it did worked in 16 colors)
it forces it back to 16 colors
so i ask if theres anything i could do to make this problem go away? - i know it doesnt sound like a vbox problem but i considered it may have somthing to do with it
thx for the help

i have tried this tutorial but i cant find a guid n how to acually install those drivers
one of which is not free - which is no option for me
and one when i downloaded had like 4 files in it and no instructions in it ...
i tried that search for drivers in win 98 when it was on a simulated cd rom (via daemon tools)
and it did not find 'driver' information there.....
I am a bit lost with this guide really....

Lots of others have followed the tutorial successfully, so I suggest you persevere. I recommend that you install the BearWindows Universal VESA driver (not the Scitech driver, and not the BearWindows "VirtualBox" driver - which was buggy).

I've not only seen it, I have followed the same tutorial with success: and I just looked at the link again, and had no difficulty seeing the download links, which seem to be functional - though I am not about to reinstall Win98 just to prove this point to you.

What you want is inside the "UNI" folder. Unpack the zip, right click on the "inf" file in the "UNI" folder, and select "install".

Oh I see. You were expecting a setup program. Device drivers don't normally come with a setup program, in the case of windows they usually come with an ".inf" file which is installed as I described above. Normally, plug and play would kick in and prompt you for a driver disk, however in this case a (limited) default driver has already been installed for the display, so you follow the above steps to replace that.

Ok, I'm not really following the tutorial up at the top. I'm trying to work through the same problem, but don't quite know if I need to have those drivers installed onto my Host computer? Do they work through Virtual Box? ( I'm guessing not because that just sounds dumb ) So my question is, how do I install these drivers in windows 98se?
