USB Device not recognized

Since updating to 4.0.10 and now to 4.0.12 and having the extension pack installed, I cannot get Win7 Home VM to accept two USB Flash drives. Both were configured/added to the USB devices list in the VB manager. The message I get from Windows when I connect either of the USB Flash units is "USB Device not recognized". Any ideas?

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8.

I discovered today that my Ubuntu VM also does not mount my USB flash devices.

I too am having similar problems.

Host is OSX 10.6

Guest 1 is Win 7 x64

Guest 2 is Ubuntu 11.04

USB device driver failure on Win7. It goes to install drivers and fails. All guest additions are up to date. Ubuntu is 100% fine on USB.

Any ideas?

I want to report that in Ubutntu 11.04, when I add my USB flash device to the setting device list for USB, then it will mount the device fine, but my Win7 VM still gets the USB Device not recognized error in VB 4.1 as well as 4.0.12, 4.0.10 and also in 4.0.8 (which I had thought worked previously ... I was wrong).

So maybe it is something in OS X 10.6.8?

Is anyone successfully connecting USB flash devices to VB 4.0.10 or 4.0.12 or 4.1 with OS X 10.6.8?

I got it to work in Win7 (guest) by going into VBOX settings-ports and making sure the "enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) controller was checked.

The system then informed me that I had to download and install some extra features (not guest additions, but something called "extensions" that was easy to download and install).

After that the USB drivers installed properly and all was well.

miami I have that box checked in my USB port settings. I'll try unchecking it and then rechecking.

Strange behavior in 4.1. I (one time only) had the USB flash drive, which is NTFS formatted, connected to OS X, then started VB and my Win 7 VM. Of course Win7 didn't see or mount the device. While Win7 VM was running I unplugged the USB device, then plugged it back in and Win7 mounted it just fine! But I haven't been able to reproduce that event again so far. Subsequent attempts to repeat still deliver the USB device not recognized.

After doing more Google searching I found a mention that running with more than one cpu might be the problem.

When I changed from 2 cpus to 1 cpu and started my Win7 VM, Win7 recognized my USB flash drive right off. I've ejected and reconnected a few times and it looks like using 2 cpus is a no-go currently when wanting to mount USB devices.

Look for the topic http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=37190&start=0

Apparently this problem goes back a long way. I'll update my problem ticket to reference this old issue.

:D

I can confirm that changing back from 2 to 1 CPU resolved the problem.
I'm running an XP VM on VirtualBox 4.1.18 r78361 on a Mac OS X host (Snow leopard, 10.6.8)

I concur. Reverting from 3 virtual cpus to 1, Ubuntu immediately picked up both my flash and external hard drive. Too bad I spent f'n 8 hours just to change 1 number. wtf. >_>
