About transferring a VM

Post by Mr Wolf »

Hi to all!
I was wondering: I install a VM, for example a guest XP, on a computer, then I export and import it on another computer, with a different hardware. The VM imported depends on the hardware of the computer? For example, video and sound settings. Or, when I import the VM, it's "adjusted" to the new hardware?
Thanks for your answers!

With VB 4.0+, you can create a VM and then transfer the resulting VM folder to another Host. This folder holds all the required files for the VM. On the other Host, you simply tell VB to add a new VM, you point it to the VM folder where you see the VM settings file, a .vbox file. The VM is added to the VM list and ready to run. Depending on the original Host OS and the receiving Host OS, you may have to check a few settings, but those should be minor. The Guest OS will still see the same hardware, only the CPU will be different. That's because the Guest sees virtual hardware and this is the same on every platform and hardware. Only the CPU is exposed when identifying hardware, the rest is virtual.
