dear all
I installed lubuntu 11.04 as guest on a win 7 as host. The version of virtualbox is 4.0.8
The problem is when I want to install guest addition I get an error

Code: Select all

mahmood@pc:/media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.8_71778$ ./autorun.sh
/usr/bin/xterm Xt error: can't open display:
/usr/bin/xterm: DISPLAY is not set
any idea to fix that?

Nothing changed. It is stated that for older version of VB, i should edit xorg.conf.
As I said, I use lubuntu which use lxdm. There is no xorg.conf and I don't know how much important it is for VB 4.0.8
As far as I remember, I didn't have such problem with lubuntu 10.10.

any comment?

Well...
Instead of ./autorun.sh I did

Code: Select all

sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
and there was no problem.

Code: Select all

root@pc:/media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.8_71778# sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.0.8 Guest Additions for Linux.........
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done.
Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done.
Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules ...done.

You may need to restart the hal service and the Window System (or just restart

Yes, I have a comment. You didn't read the howto properly. There are clear notes that the xorg config is NOT required for newer versions of Linux. Nor did you properly read what command you had to use to install the GA.

See, that's after you actually start reading. Taking a long piece of text for granted and not trying to understand it and take your time while it's in the tutorials section is disrespectful towards the writer. Since you found the proper way, I forgive you. I hope you don't do things like this in normal life when you're in a hurry, you could get burned one day.

Take care.
