Can't create a working vm from an installation disk ...
For the life of me, I cannot seem to create a working vm whatsoever! Can someone *please* explain how this is done from VBoxGTK, as everything I can think of trying has failed, and none of the howtos are making any sense on this.

Nope. We don't support VBoxGTK.

Is it just me, or does their website answer your question:
"Most of VirtualBox features are not supported, and those that are will probably fail."
(and neither does it mention any compatibility with VBox 4.x...)
