Windows XP won't install

Post by GameSlayerGS »

I'm really hoping somebody here can help me, I've been trying to install Windows XP from a disc that I created using an installation on another computer.
Setup copies all the files from the disc just fine, except for plugin.ocx which is for ActiveX so I wasn't concerned I figured I could just install it later, anyways, after it copies the files, the VM restarts, as it's supposed to, and then the message "Setup is being restarted........................." appears. This is all fine and such, but then some error message pops up and only stays there long enough to read a word or two. It then restarts again and the whole thing happens all over again.
Any ideas?
The messages tend to say something along the lines of "There is not enough system resources to complete the requested operation." or something like that.
Help would be much appreciated.

Details please, i.e. what tool was used, what disk format you created.

I followed the guide here: http://www.howtohaven.com/system/create ... disk.shtml

I did everything exactly as it appeared, I encountered an error when attempting to slipstre service pack 3. I'm using SP 3 even though the guide only goes to SP 2, I think that's just because it's a little older than it could be, I don't think it made a difference. I did download the correct file for SP 3 though.

Ok, I see. I'm afraid the plain fact is that you don't have a kosher setup disk, and since your setup disk is non standard I cannot predict how it should behave, meaning I can't help you. Perhaps you should contact the author of that information for advice.

Hm... I doubt that'll happen. I might do it, but Windows XP is just over 10 years old now, so I'm assuming the guide is similarly old, which might make it difficult to contact the author about that specifically, I can try some other guide online about it, but I really wish Microsoft would just make Windows downloadable! It ain't that hard, for goodness sakes Apple is doing it, with Mac OS X.
Ok, well I'll try contacting the author and looking for another guide on how to do it.
Thanks anyways.

Mac OS X can only legally be run on Apple hardware so that is a possibility for Apple. Windows or Linux are expected to run on any x86/x64 hardware setup anybody can dream up. The size of the image which would support any possible hardware config is frightening.

I understand, I do. I'd be willing to take the time to download it though. Or, I know this isn't the type of thing to suggest to you guys, it's more a thing to suggest to Microsoft. Anyways, I think we should be able to like upload system specs and download a customized copy of Windows.

Also, doesn't Virtualbox allow running of Mac OS X? I'm pretty sure it does, and considering the "illegal" part and all, it seems like something they, Oracle, wouldn't do.

It's my understanding that Microsoft do make ISO images of their OS setup CDs available for download, but you need an MSDN subscription. My point is that ISO size is not a fundamental obstacle, or MSDN couldn't do it either.

ISTR myself, when I first got interested in VMs, also looking in vain for a downloadable but legal copy of XP. Failing that, an official online shop for CD keys. But nope, in this so-called digital age, when dealing with an alleged leader of that age, I had to buy physical media.
