Windows NT 3.51: Video & Sound

Hi all,

I'm running Windows XP Professional as my host and Windows NT 3.51 with SP5 as my guest, mostly for nostalgia reasons and to play around with it.

I've successfully installed it and OOB it even has internet capabilites via IE5 (which I installed). However I am running into some issues.

1.) My video is stuck at 640x480 with 16 colors. I've searched around and am trying to use an S3 video driver, but it doesn't work. When I install the driver and restart Windows, it tells me via the Event Viewer that the driver failed to load. What driver should I be using?

2.)What driver should I be using for sound?

3.) Via this site (http://home.comcast.net/~zerosky/freaked/winnt351.html) I've downloaded some old Windows freeware like Opera and what not. I put a bunch of them into an ISO and am attempting to install them but the OS tells me that the "Program is too big to fit in memory". I've given the VM 512mb which is probably more than the OS can handle. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any help. :)

You need a generic VESA grapics driver, similar to the one that Win9x users use in VBox. Whether that exists or not I don't know - I've never looked, since my NT nostalgia is capped at NT4 sp6 (which VBox supports).

For Sound try SB16. That should work for old Windows Versions.

Thanks guys, that video driver works great. :)

As for the SB16 sound driver, where can I find that? I am Googling around but not seeing it yet.

Does anyone know my question number 3 (copied below)? I also have a new question.

3.) Via this site (http://home.comcast.net/~zerosky/freaked/winnt351.html) I've downloaded some old Windows freeware like Opera and what not. 4.) Is there any way to get the mouse scrolling to work? I have a 5 button Microsoft Intellimouse. While I doubt there are drivers for it, having the scroll working and/or the scroll button to work as a double click would be nice.

Re question 3, you are on the right track. I would reduce the memory size of the vm. I have seen the "too big to fit in memory" message when in fact the real problem is that the memory allocated is too large for the memory check software to handle. You can always increase it again after you get the software installed.

Re your mouse question: no you can't get any special features to work in the guest. The guest's mouse is emulated (virtual), and the mouse variant being emulated is a standard PS/2 kind.
